Barcino to Barcelona - A history of the city
The city of Barcelona today covers an area of almost 40 square miles, but in the Roman era was known as Barcino with Barcelona half a square mile. In that article, we cover the history of the city and how it evolved with its many expansions. The biggest expansion was the Eixample district during the turn of the 20th Century by Ildefons Cerdà. Our office is located in this district within the Sant Antoni neighbourhood.
A history of the neighbourhoods
Barcelona has 27 neighbourhoods, each with a unique history, architectural style, and atmosphere. One of them is Barceloneta. Before, it was mainly fishermen's quarter and then, since the construction of Ciutadella Park for the 1888 Universal Exhibition and the Olympic Games of 1992, the local population and infrastructure has evolved. Today it is one of the most popular areas of Barcelona.
A history of the monuments
Simply walk around Barcelona and you will see many monuments. Do you know their history? You can find the Columbus monument found at the bottom of Las Ramblas, built for the 1888 Universal Exhibition. Then there's Barcelona Cathedral a building with an epic history almost as long as the city itself. And who could forget the Sagrada Familia? The building that even today is still changing.
The transformation of the marketplaces
There are more than 39 markets in Barcelona with fresh local produce. Some marketplaces are known for their beautiful architecture that converts them into places of touristic interest. One example is the famous 'La Boqueria Market' by Las Ramblas and with roots dating back to 1217 when it was a meat market. Then there's Sant Antoni Market - currently under renovation - which is a gorgeous modernist marketplace made of metal.
Barcelona's parks - Before and after
There are many parks around the city. Some are uptown and outside the centre, like Parc Laberint d'Hort, but the most famous park is in the centre of the city - Parc de la Ciutadella. This is the largest park in Barcelona and is located beside the Born district. The history of Ciutadella as a park begins in the 19th Century and it has undergone several changes since.
